International 6m Class Open Championships
Steve from Boatshed Falmouth reports that the International 6 Metre class have chosen Falmouth as their venue for their 2010 Open Championship under the auspices of the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. The racing takes place 20 -23rd May on upwind downwind courses, meaning plenty of tactical racing, picking the wind shifts in the Carrick roads. It’s a 10 race series with up to four races per day.
The 6 Metre is the smallest of the Metre Class yachts and probably the most popular. They go back a long way, being founded in 1906 and although all the boats are slightly different, they must measure to a particular formula, with lots of big numbers in it, the out come of which is 6m ! Hence, the name 6m, which shouldn’t be confused with the hull length as most boats are around 11 m long.
There is still time to enter the championship with this rather gorgeous 6m which is currently for sale through Boatshed Cowes
There are a number of lovely old 6m class yachts still in need of restoration and here are a couple, in Falmouth (see picture below), hoping for someone to fall in love with them. They’ll not make this year’s championships but maybe 2011 will see them on the start line. If you want more information on these, please contact Steve at Boatshed Falmouth
